What is AI photography?
AI product photos are product images generated or heavily enhanced using artificial intelligence. There are several ways to use AI in product photography.
One approach is to generate the entire image from scratch, where both the product and its environment are created by AI. Another popular method is AI compositing, where a real product photo is uploaded and AI generates a matching background around it.
There is also AI retouching, which enhances an existing photograph – adjusting lighting, improving details, or replacing the background while keeping the original product intact. Another commonly used technique involves AI mockups, where a real product is placed into a realistic, AI-generated scene.
The least frequently used method is 3D compositing, where a 3D model of the product is created and AI generates an environment for it.

AI from scratch
Generating product photos from scratch using prompts means creating the entire scene — the product, background, lighting, and composition – solely with artificial intelligence. In practice, this involves entering a text description (a prompt) into an AI tool, specifying the product’s appearance, material, shape, color, photography style, environment, and overall mood of the image. Based on this description, the AI generates a complete visual.
Advantages
The biggest advantage is flexibility and cost efficiency – there’s no need for a physical product, camera, studio, or lighting setup. We can create multiple variations of the images with ease. Another key benefit is speed: even a large batch of visuals can be generated in minutes instead of days.
Defects
The images don’t represent a real product, so it’s important to ensure they remain true to reality – especially when it comes to color, proportions, textures, and technical details.
Compositing
Compositing is a technique where we use a real product photo, and AI generates the background and environment. First, we take a high-quality product image — ideally on a neutral background with even lighting, so the AI can easily separate the product. Then we upload the photo into an AI tool and describe the desired scene, including style, setting, lighting, colors, and mood. The AI creates a matching background, and we refine the result through iterations to enhance details and achieve a realistic final image.
Advantages
It preserves full product authenticity – crucial in industries where appearance and details must be accurately represented. While still offering huge creative freedom. You can place the product in virtually any environment without compromising its real look.
Defects
To achieve a truly realistic result, the product photo must be high-quality, and the lighting and perspective need to match the generated background. Otherwise, AI may produce an artificial-looking blend, incorrect reflections, or mismatched shadows. This means that if top-tier quality is a priority, you should plan for the cost of a professional studio packshot – that kind of image provides the ideal foundation for AI work.
AI retouching
AI retouching uses artificial intelligence to enhance a real photo of a product. In practice, we start with a classic packshot or lifestyle photo and then apply AI tools to improve lighting, colors, contrast, remove imperfections, smooth surfaces, and give the image a polished, studio-quality look. AI can also subtly adjust the composition, boost textures, or generate new lighting that better fits the product’s character. If needed, the background can be replaced or a new scene can be created – while still keeping the product in its true, authentic form.
Advantages
The biggest advantage is the blend of real-world authenticity with the creative freedom of AI. The product remains true to its real details, while we can elevate the image to look like a high-end professional photoshoot.
Defects
To achieve the best results, the original photo – the starting point – must be well-executed. A weak or blurry image is difficult to fix, even with the most advanced AI tools. AI retouching is therefore ideal for enhancing marketing materials that are based on professionally taken photos.
AI Mockups
AI mockups involve placing a product photo into a generated or real-world scene so that it appears as a natural part of the environment. We start by preparing a clean product image – this can be a packshot on a white background or a render with a transparent background. Next, we use AI tools to seamlessly insert the product into the chosen scene, automatically matching perspective, lighting, and shadows.
Advantages
This method is perfect for visualizing concepts, testing different aesthetics, and producing content for social media, advertising campaigns, lookbooks, or product pages. Products can appear in luxurious interiors, minimalist setups, outdoor environments, or even futuristic spaces — all without physical limitations or additional production costs.
Defects
However, this method also has its limitations. If the product image is low-quality or poorly cut out, the final result will look artificial. That’s why we require high-quality product photos as a starting point. Additionally, AI doesn’t always perfectly adjust the product’s perspective or lighting, which can lead to unrealistic results.
Compositing 3D
3D compositing is a method of creating product visuals where, instead of using a photograph, we work with a 3D model of the product and place it into an AI-generated or rendered scene. The product exists digitally – it can be created in 3D software or captured using a 3D scanner. AI assists in matching lighting, materials, shadows, and the surrounding environment, making the product appear as if it were photographed in a real setting. This technique is similar to photographic compositing, but instead of a real photo, the foundation is a three-dimensional model.
Advantages
The biggest advantage of 3D compositing is its complete flexibility. We can create any angle, adjust the camera, lighting, materials, and environment – all without scheduling a photoshoot or re-photographing the product. This makes it an ideal solution for industries that require multiple visual variations, such as consumer electronics, premium cosmetics, furniture, sporting equipment, or automotive. By working from a 3D model, we maintain full control over every detail, ensuring the product always remains true to the original.
Defects
A professionally created 3D model is required, which involves additional cost and production time.
What’s the difference between 3D compositing and a 3D mockup?
AI compositing means uploading a real photo of a product and letting AI generate a matching background and environment. The product remains a real photograph, while the surroundings are AI-generated.
AI mockup, on the other hand, involves placing the product into an existing or AI-generated scene (similar to traditional Photoshop mockups), but the placement is enhanced by AI. The AI can adjust the product’s perspective and angle to match the scene. The scene itself is prepared in advance — either created manually or generated by AI — and the product is visually blended into it.
What is the difference between 3D compositing and traditional 3D rendering?
3D compositing means working with a 3D model of the product and placing it into a scene that is either generated or enhanced using AI. The model is digitally inserted into the environment, and AI assists with lighting, shadows, and visual integration to make the scene look realistic.
In contrast, a traditional 3D render is created entirely inside a 3D software environment (e.g., Blender, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max). The product, background, lighting, and camera setup are all fully designed and rendered within the program, without relying on AI for scene creation or enhancement.
